United State Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Portland District under the terms of the 2009 System wide Programmatic Agreement (SWPA) for management of historic properties affected by operations of the Federal Columbia River Power System (FCRPS) requested cultural resources research and studies involving 25 Bergen sites within The Dalles and John Day Projects, Oregon for compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Dr. Bergen recorded many sites providing them with his own site number and are sometimes referred to as the Bergen Sites.
PanGIS PI led a team of qualified staff to provide a brief history of Dr. Bergen’s work on the Columbia River, identify and assess the Bergen sites and determine if they are associated with recorded site trinomials, confirm site locations using forms, historic aerials, and records from the Burke Museum, with approval to Oregon Archaeological Records Remote Access OARRA) and Washington Information System for Architectural & Archaeological Records Data (WISAARD), conducted field verification of the site locations when possible, update and submit site forms to SHPOs office; and prepare a final survey report and site forms.
